Newcomers to the sport should pick wider, flatter boards which offer greater stability. When choosing a paddle, look for one that feels comfortable in your hands and is approximately 6 to 10 inches taller than you are. If you plan on paddling in navigable waters, you will need to wear a personal flotation device (PFD). Always wear waterproof sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself from the UV radiation. In colder water, you will need a wet suit.
